2018 Tourism Society Symposium

Leading experts are lined up to speak at the annual Tourism Society Symposium taking place at the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, London on 4 and 5 June 2018. The Symposium will bring together tourism professionals debating topics around the theme, ‘Changing Times For Tourism’.

Confirmed speakers to date include Arts Council England CEO, Darren Henley OBE; David Statham, Managing Director, Southeastern; Geoffrey Lipman, Director Green Earth Travel and the SUNx programme; Caroline Bremner, Head of Travel and Tourism Research at Euromonitor; Shain Shapiro of Sound Diplomacy, Angela McConville CEO of Greenwich Foundation for the ORNC and Merilee Karr, Founder and CEO of Underthedoormat.com.

The speakers will cover a wide a range of topical issues including the sharing economy, balancing the benefits and effects of over-tourism, examining the value of heritage as an attractor for economic development, and tourism’s long-term sustainability, all from a UK, EU and international perspective.

Day one of the Symposium, Monday 4 June, offers delegates a choice of three Discovery Tours created by Visit Greenwich and its partners to showcase the diverse range of experiences available within this historic and vibrant London Borough.  This will be followed by a Summer Reception of informal, relaxed networking, refreshments and canapes at the elegant Queen Mary Undercroft, Old Royal Naval College, hosted by the Tourism Society’s President, Lord Thurso. 

Day two, 5 June, takes place in the University of Greenwich, Old Royal Naval College with a full programme of leading speakers exploring the Symposium theme with case studies and opportunities for networking.
